The session highlights the value of early collaboration with underwriting and advanced planning teams on large case underwriting. It clarifies the distinction between sales strategies and financial underwriting requirements with examples of where they both converge and diverge. Advisors will gain actionable tips to streamline the underwriting process, minimize delays, and ensure their cases make sense from both a sales and underwriting perspective.

Paul Thorne, BComm, LL.B., LLM., CFP®, TEP

Director of Advance Planning, EFPS, Sun Life

Paul is the Director of Advanced Planning in Sun Life’s Estate & Financial Planning Services (EFPS) division. He focuses on complex case consultation within EFPS, with special attention to wills, trusts, estate planning, and Canadian business owners. Paul is passionate about taking these complex topics and distilling them down into practical solutions with a goal of ensuring Client’s understand how they’ll meet their goals and objectives tax efficiently.

He also heads content development for EFPS and acts as tax and legal subject-matter expert for various areas of Sun Life. Prior to joining Sun Life Financial, Paul practiced law with a focus on estate planning, trusts, corporate structures and reorganizations, and taxation. He is the former President of the Halifax Estate Planning Council and is a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society.

Paul has won several awards while continuing to advance his education including First place on the President’s List for highest mark on the CFP exam in Canada in November 2014 and Highest mark on the Taxation of Trusts TEP exam in 2018. He was awarded the FP Canada Fellow distinction in 2024 for his significant volunteer contributions to FP Canada’s mandate of advancing professional financial planning in Canada. 

Jay Sankoff, BSc. AALU, ALMI

AVP, High Net Worth Solutions Centre and Field Underwriting, Sun Life

Jay joined Sun Life in 2014 to lead the Independent New Business and Underwriting teams..  In 2018, he created the High Net Worth Team focusing on cases over $250,000 of premium or $7,500,000 in face amount. Two years later, looking for ways to further improve the advisor and client experience Jay created the High Net Worth Solutions Centre.  Now called Sun Life Select, Jay has joined the Sun Life Sales Team in educating and supporting advisors, to improve their large case application submissions for quicker decisions.

Jay is an avid traveler, scuba diver, dedicated hockey player and coach. Happy to be back on the ice, and looking forward to strapping a tank on his back again, Jay also enjoys spending time in the summer with his wife and daughter at the cottage or on a golf course.

Dave has been a dedicated industry professional since 2011, specializing in helping advisors expand their businesses and explore new markets. 

Before joining Sun Life Consulting, Dave worked in field-based sales, assisting advisors with various business models to grow their practices in upmarket segments. This role allowed him to engage with business owners, high-net-worth individuals, and their allied professionals, providing Dave with valuable insights into the keys to success for advisors in these markets. 

Currently, Dave serves as the Director of Business Development for the Western Region at Sun Life. Committed to ongoing professional development, he has earned several designations: Chartered Life Underwriter®

(CLU), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP). These credentials underscore his comprehensive expertise in insurance and financial planning. 

Outside of his professional life, Dave enjoys spending quality time with his family, often skiing in the Rocky Mountains.
