FSRA’s Financial Planner / Advisor Title Protection Act came into effect in March 2022. The Act mandates that Life & Health Insurance Agents in Ontario using "Financial Planner" or "Financial Advisor" titles must:
- Hold a FSRA-approved credential.
- Adhere to restrictions around the use of similar titles.
FSRA recently conducted reviews of advisors’ titles and found instances of non-compliance with these requirements.
If you’ve been using the title of “Financial Planner” or “Financial Advisor”, or similar, in Ontario, it is important that you:
- Check the list of FSRA-approved credentials to verify if you are qualified to use the title.
- Check the FSRA Financial Professionals Tiles (Appendix 1) to ensure adherence to restrictions around the use of the title
- Ensure the title is accurate and up-to-date, and is used consistently, in all public-facing communications and platforms including advertising, on letterhead and business cards, and social media platforms.
Following these steps will help avoid regulatory fines and/or consequences for non-compliance.
