Frank Lapierre

As an accomplished insurance professional with more than twenty years in the financial services industry, Frank’s strategic approach, dedication to excellent service, and passion for providing innovative solutions brought a valuable asset back to Sun Life in 2020, after a previous period spent with Sun Life from 2001-2012. His understanding of the complexities of insurance products allows him to position a variety of strategies to help clients make the best risk management choices.

Frank has held several positions, including Estate Insurance Advisor with one of the big 5 banks, that have helped forge his extensive knowledge of life insurance products provided by the largest insurers in the Canadian market, and helped him bring creative insurance solutions to life. Frank's relentless drive for improvement has led to completion of the Chartered Life Underwriter and Certified Financial Planner designations.

As Manager of Insurance Solutions Enablement, Frank provides expert knowledge on life insurance products to advisors and internal partners, delivering presentations to convey competitive positioning in identified target markets. Frank is also involved in the production of strategic competitive analysis and marketing materials, that deliver on product strategy and provide meaningful insights to help distribution partners achieve results.

Planning and protection for young families is an important aspect of a financial advisor’s role. In many cases the solutions and planning scenarios are simple However, this presentation will consider different strategies on how to position it for Clients. This includes mortgage protection with a twist, planning for young children using a combination of wealth and protection, using term insurance to protect income splitting tax advantages, and considerations for the younger unincorporated family.

Paul Thorne

Paul is the Director of Advanced Planning in Sun Life’s Estate & Financial Planning Services (EFPS) division. He focuses on complex case consultation within EFPS, with special attention to wills, trusts, estate planning, and Canadian business owners. Paul is passionate about taking these complex topics and distilling them down into practical solutions with a goal of ensuring Client’s understand how they’ll meet their goals and objectives tax efficiently. He also heads content development for EFPS and acts as tax and legal subject-matter expert for various areas of Sun Life. Prior to joining Sun Life Financial, Paul practiced law with a focus on estate planning, trusts, corporate structures and reorganizations, and taxation. He is the former President of the Halifax Estate Planning Council and is a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society. Paul has won several awards while continuing to advance his education including First place on the President’s List for highest mark on the CFP exam in Canada in November 2014 and Highest mark on the Taxation of Trusts TEP exam in 2018. He was awarded the FP Canada Fellow distinction in 2024 for his significant volunteer contributions to FP Canada’s mandate of advancing professional financial planning in Canada.
