In this session, we’ll revisit some basic planning strategies and introduce some more complex planning items you can discuss with Clients in the next couple of months. This includes a review of personal tax items that affect many Canadians as well as some niche items that don’t come up every day. Further, we will include an introduction to some topics that have become more relevant for 2026 and beyond due to available budget announcements.

Paul Thorne, BComm, LL.B., LLM., CFP®, TEP

Director of Advance Planning, EFPS, Sun Life

Paul is the Director of Advanced Planning in Sun Life’s Estate & Financial Planning Services (EFPS) division. He focuses on complex case consultation within EFPS, with special attention to wills, trusts, estate planning, and Canadian business owners. Paul is passionate about taking these complex topics and distilling them down into practical solutions with a goal of ensuring Client’s understand how they’ll meet their goals and objectives tax efficiently. He also heads content development for EFPS and acts as tax and legal subject-matter expert for various areas of Sun Life. Prior to joining Sun Life Financial, Paul practiced law with a focus on estate planning, trusts, corporate structures and reorganizations, and taxation. He is the former President of the Halifax Estate Planning Council and is a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society. Paul has won several awards while continuing to advance his education including First place on the President’s List for highest mark on the CFP exam in Canada in November 2014 and Highest mark on the Taxation of Trusts TEP exam in 2018. He was awarded the FP Canada Fellow distinction in 2024 for his significant volunteer contributions to FP Canada’s mandate of advancing professional financial planning in Canada. 

Valerie Chan, CPA, CA, CPA, TEP, FEA, CFP®

Director of Advanced Planning, EFPS, Sun Life

Valerie is an experienced financial planner and accountant. During her time as a tax manager, she specialized in personal, corporate and trust & estate taxation. She also has experience supporting ultra-high net worth private banking clients with wealth and tax planning.

In addition to the CFP and TEP designations, Valerie holds accounting designations in Canada (CPA, CA) and in the US (CPA, Washington) and recently obtained her FEA designation. Valerie is particularly interested in helping Clients reach their financial goals through tax efficiencies and estate enhancement.

Lino Puzzuoli, MBA

Lino Puzzuoli is the Director of Insurance Concepts at Sun Life.  In this role Lino leads a team of professionals delivering technical insights, sales strategy guides, and illustration tools to wholesale teams. 

Entrepreneurial by nature, Lino joined Sun Life after selling his businesses and returning to school to earn an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business. He is passionate about finance and was hooked ever since his first economics class – subsequently earning a B.A. in Economics, a Certified Financial Planner designation and his Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.

When he was an owner and the CFO for a construction company, Lino learned what it’s like to be personally invested during both boom and bust cycles. He appreciates the challenges faced by business owners and can identify with their concerns.

As a believer in lifelong learning, Lino speaks French and Italian well enough to get into and out of trouble. Lino is married and the father of two young children, most easily found during the summer months in his garden.
