Critical Illness Insurance Life Insurance
  • Backdate up to six months

When backdating more than three months, we’ll need to make a change to the policy. The change will address the start dates of the contestability period and the exclusion periods for:

  • Cancer
  • A benign brain tumour
  • Parkinson’s disease, and Specified atypical parkinsonian disorders
  • Backdate par and Universal Life (UL) policies up to 10.5 months
  • Backdate all other non-par policies up to 12 months

Any par policies backdated 10.5 months must be settled within two weeks of the issue date.

When backdating more than six months, we’ll need to make a change to the policy. This change will address the start dates of the suicide and contestability periods.

A policy can’t be backdated in order to apply for a benefit or provision that would otherwise be unavailable. The availability of benefits and provisions are based on the insured person’s age nearest at the time the application is completed.

For example, we can’t backdate to:

  • Age nearest 17 to issue a juvenile policy
  • Age nearest 50 to apply for the LTCCO
  • Age nearest 50 to apply for ROPD on a Sun Permanent Life policy

Note:

  • If you want to backdate a critical illness or life insurance policy and are using Sun eApp, continue to select the “retain age” box, when available. If the retain age box isn’t available, add a note in the “special instructions” section on the summary screen of the application.
  • These guidelines are also applicable for conversion and replacement applications.
